Description
I remember coming home from kindergarten one day, which was at that time a half day, and my mom had a group of ladies over at our house. They were sitting in our kitchen drinking coffee out of dainty white cups. How the arced imprints of their pink and red lipsticks fascinated me. I thought it must be nice to be grown up and drink coffee while wearing lipstick and to leave a colorful trace of oneself behind. They were talking about a woman named Marta Beckett. She was a dancer who'd bought a theater in Death Valley, less than an hour from where I lived. She danced variations from different ballets every day at noon even if nobody came to watch her. Isn't that strange, the women wondered. But I didn't think so. I thought it was like hearing there is a certain kind of undiscovered magic, this idea that there was someone out there who committed to the act of making a bit of beauty every day...even if no one was watching.
